He married twice. He married Temperance Stone. Temperance was born in TN 1813. Temperance was the daughter of Thomas Stone. He married Hellen Deavenport Black.
John Clayton Tarpley and Temperance Stone had the following children:

Sarah P. Tarpley was born in TN July 15, 1841. Sarah died December 2, 1927 in Cedar Hill, Dallas County,
TX, at 86 years of age. She married Merritt Birdsong Harwell in Giles County, TN, February 27,
1866. Merritt was born in TN 1831. Merritt was the son of Josiah Harwell and Rebecca. Merritt died
December 27, 1905 in TX, at 74 years of age. His body was interred Trees Family Cemetery. (See Merritt Birdsong Harwell for the continuation of this line.)
