He married Lucy M. Harwell in TX. Lucy was born in Cedar Hill, Dallas County, TX About 1903. Lucy was the daughter of Josiah "Joe" Clayton Harwell and Myrtle May Trees. Lucy died April 1995 at 91 years of age. Her body was interred in Cedar Hill, Dallas County, TX, Trees Cemetery.

Wendell Layfette Johnston and Lucy M. Harwell had the following children:

4 iii. Shirley Johnston (still alive).

5 iv. Ralph T. Johnston was born in Mansfield, Tarrant County, TX October 27, 1927. Ralph died November 9, 1999 in Granbury, TX, at 72 years of age. His body was interred in Granbury, TX, Holy Hills Memorial Park.
